Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2024 was a globally significant event dedicated to sustainable food systems, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship. This edition centered on the theme “We Are Nature”, emphasizing the interconnectedness between humans, the environment, and food systems. The event featured immersive experiences, expert discussions, and a showcase of local and global food cultures, all aimed at fostering regenerative and sustainable practices.
The 2024 edition brought together participants from over 150 countries, including:
- Farmers, Breeders, and Cooks: Advocating for local and traditional food systems.
- Indigenous People and Migrants: Sharing knowledge about biodiversity and cultural food practices.
- Young Activists: Engaging in initiatives to promote sustainable agriculture and regenerative practices.
- Economists, Environmentalists, and Artists: Contributing to discussions on food culture, sustainability, and community development.
More than 300,000 visitors attended, providing a diverse audience to engage in the numerous activities, discussions, and demonstrations. On 29 September 2024, the city of Turin organized a meeting under the FUSILLI project titled: “FUSILLI: Implementation Tools for Urban Food Policy.”
During the meeting, the main objectives achieved by the project were presented, with a focus on the tools implemented by the cities of Turin, Oslo, and Rome. Speakers included Laura Ribotta from the City of Turin, Elisabetta Luzzi from Risorse per Roma S.p.a. and Line Tveiten from the City of Oslo.
The city of Turin discussed the development of food policies within the city over the years and how specific guidelines for city policies were approved during the FUSILLI project. The city of Rome shared its model for the Food Council, which originated as a bottom-up initiative from associations and led to the creation of a dedicated city office. Subsequently, the City of Oslo explained how it has successfully piloted an inhouse advisory service for sustainable and healthy food, working with public schools and nursing homes.

On the occasion of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2024, Mirafood, the Slow Food Community for the valorisation of the Mirafiori district, has organised 6 events both in the neighbourhood and at Terra Madre Salone del Gusto. All the events were organized in cooperation with FUSILLI project and were open to the community with the aim of experiencing the ‘history of food as nourishment, culture, conviviality, pleasure’.
The “Social Passata” at Orti Generali, one of the best-loved traditions, an event to be experienced together in a big three-day party; the Community Dinners at the Casa nel Parco, three evenings of sharing between citizens; Apiari Aperti, a day of guided tours, workshops and honey tasting in the three urban apiaries of the neighbourhood, Spazio WOW, Orti Generali, Coop. I Passi, are the places where the honeys of the “MA.MI food- Made in Mirafiori” basket are also produced. The grandmothers of Essere Anziani a Mirafiori sud were the protagonists of the 2 competitions “La Sfida delle Nonne” at the Locanda nel Parco and “A Pranzo dalle Nonne”, a fresh pasta workshop open to the community, in the Terra Madre setting; the “Passeggiata Gastronomica”, a 5 km urban walk on pedestrian paths to discover the typical flavours, history and redevelopment of the neighbourhood of Mirafiori sud with 4 gastronomic stops.
The basket of typical products “MA.MI food – Made in Mirafiori” has been supporting local economic development and neighbourhood business since 2020, with the discovery, design and promotion of food excellence in Mirafiori, a district in south of Turin. From the experience and success of ‘Tronchetto di Caterina’, the special apple pie that, in 2020, acknowledged Mirafiori as the only neighbourhood in Turin with it’s own typical dessert, the Mirafiori Foundation and Mirafood, the Slow Food community committed itself for the for the development of the Mirafiori Sud area. This initiative made them create MA.MI food – Made in Mirafiori.
