“Hungry for Exchange” Webinars
Hungry for Exchange are flagship events for the Knowledge Community – a sort of community of practice for anyone interested in or working in the field of urban food system transformation.
Aptly titled Hungry for Exchange, these webinars are scheduled during lunchtime on a Thursday and is a series of 6 public (open) webinar events for the worldwide knowledge community.
In each webinar, 1 initiative, organization, or institution external to the FUSILLI consortium is invited to present during the webinar, as well as 1 or 2 FUSILLI cities, to present their activities and lessons learned and related to a specific ‘food theme’ (e.g. food education, stakeholder engagement, from farm to fork, advocacy, etc.).
Edition #6 – How ‘Local’ is Beautiful: Education as a catalyst for change
In a world where food systems, actors, challenges, and value chains vary dramatically, the influence of citizens and established local initiatives cannot be overstated. In this session we explore the essential themes of how education and awareness raising is crucial in advocating for ‘Local’. We focus on the importance of education in promoting healthy habits in production and consumption across all ages and stakeholder groups.
We are joined by representatives from the FUSILLI cities Marion Villacampa from San Sebastian, Spain, and Mehmet Can Yilmaz from Nilufer, Turkey, who will present successful initiatives developed over the past four years, showcasing experiential knowledge and impactful case studies. Our external speaker, Aylin Topal a faculty member of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Middle East Technical University, will lead a discussion on cooperative educational programs and the significance of local solutions in creating sustainable food systems.
Feeding Cities 2024: Seeds of Change
Featuring a Keynote by Emma Haske: “Building Bridges to Social Movements for radical re-imagination of new food systems“ and Hungry for Exchange #5: “Waste-Less Cities: Smart Solutions for Urban Food Sustainability” with insights from Athens and Rijeka
The transformation of a food system is not without its challenges, but fortunately, we have plenty of success stories to share. Building on the success of the first Feeding Cities conference last June, this second edition promises to be an enriching event. It aims to provide a space to share seeds of change. This conference builds on the four core themes that emerged from last year’s conference. After almost four years of FUSILLI, we highlight best practices, share lessons learned, and discuss challenges overcome during the food system transformation process.
Edition #4 – Local solutions: Building self-sustaining urban food networks
Food systems, actors, challenges, and value chains vary widely from city to city, and are influenced in no small way by the citizens and established local initiatives. Promoting local solutions are key in developing measures that last and create impact. In this session, we delve into the pressing challenge of creating alternative spaces for sustainable food existence in urban areas. Our focus will be on exploring how to foster self-sustaining solutions beyond traditional projects. We are joined by representatives from the FUSILLI cities of Turin and Kharkiv, offering diverse perspectives on circular food systems and innovative policy solutions amidst war, as well as an external speaker from Brussels sharing insights from the the global framework of the ‘Good Food Strategy’ as a local and sustainable food policy.
Edition #3: Green growth, post-growth or degrowth ?
Cities across Europe that take action for food system transformation are often challenged in collaborating with growth- or profit-oriented stakeholders. Where sustainable and healthy food for all is sometimes seen as a ‘public good’, it is difficult to make change happen in a globalized food system that is generally oriented towards economic growth. In this edition, FUSILLI Living Lab coordinators Karoliina Tuukkanen from Tampere (FI) and Line Tveiten from Oslo (NO) alongside urban plan researcher Dr. Emel Karakaya from Izmir Democracy University will explore these challenges and their strategies to deal with them.
Edition #2: Hungry for Exchange X Feeding Cities Conference
Amidst social, environmental, and economic pressures on food systems worldwide, cities increasingly take up a crucial and leading role in food system transformations. The Feeding Cities conference brought together city-region practitioners along food chains to set a common research agenda. The diverse program of keynote speakers, practitioner-led and researcher-led workshops, interactive webinars and panel discussions around strengthening practitioner-researcher collaborations has led to the setting of a common transformation Agenda.
Edition #1: Connecting with People
Representatives of our Living Labs: Helle Vilsboll from Kolding (DK) and Celia Ferreira dn Mario Cristovao from Castelo Branco (PT), will share how connecting with people in the city has been key in kickstarting urban food system transformation. The guest of our first webinar edition, Francesco Lombardo representing the municipality of Bologna (IT) from the FoodE project, will present outcomes from two pilot projects on urban agriculture, gardening, food education, social acitivities and hospitality.
